Vermont Cheese Legend Wedges into Portland

Renowned cheese author Jeffrey Roberts spent a whirlwind weekend in Portland for the First Annual "The Wedge" cheese festival.

Roberts, a Vermont resident, is the author of the recently released Atlas of American Artisan Cheese, the first reference book of its kind that highlights over 350 of the best small-scale cheese makers from across the United States. Roberts is also one of the founders of the Vermont Institute for Artisan Cheese, is a national director of Slow Food USA, and has twice co-chaired "Artisan Cheeses of America".

Jeff RobertsThe busy weekend kicked off Friday night as Roberts, cheese makers, and sponsors gathered for the Cheese Makers reception at Portland's Park Kitchen restaurant. Cheeses from across the Pacific Northwest were featured and paired with Oregon wines and Rogue Ales.

Saturday saw the debut of the First Annual "The Wedge" cheese festival, held at Portland's South Park Blocks. Over 15,000 people tasted amazing artisanal cheeses of 25 producers from Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Utah, and California. During the festival, Jeff Roberts conducted seminars on the renaissance of artisanal cheese in the United States with a specific focus on the Northwest.

Saturday evening Roberts hosted a 5-course gourmet meal and book signing at the Rogue Distillery and Public House. Courses included Kobe Blue Balls stuffed with Rogue Creamery Crater Lake Blue Cheese, Berkshire pork stuffed with Scio Heritage aged sheep cheese, and apple pie made with Rogue Creamery's Rogue River Blue. All the courses were paired with Rogue's world class ales, stouts, porters, and lagers.

Why "The Wedge" in Portland? "Last summer, Portland played host to the American Cheese Society's National Conference, which lured more than 167 cheesemakers to the city for a three day educational and gastronomic fete", said Tami Parr, founder of the Pacific Northwest Cheese Project and Wedge organizer. "Inspired by its success and record breaking attendance, local cheese shop owners, cheesemakers, and the Oregon Cheese Guild took note, and they were motivated to create a signature cheese event for Portland that celebrates and educates people about the Northwest's thriving cheese scene."

The Wedge is a non-profit event sponsored by the Dairy Farmers of Oregon, the Oregon Cheese Guild, and Rogue Ales.
